This photo shows the west side of the Grote Markt with the Goudkantoor and the A-kerk in Groningen. You can see the destruction from the fighting in Groningen in 1945. From April 13 to 16, 1945, some fourteen thousand Canadians fought fiercely in the city. The Canadians first opened fire on the east of the city to prevent the Germans from retreating to Delfzijl.
